Abstract

'The growth of IPE in the Antwerp Higher Education area'

G. Tsakitzidis (University College Artesis Hogeschool Antwerpen, Belgium) and P. Van Royen (University of Antwerp, Belgium)

In the academic year 2004-2005 the project Interprofessional collaboration in health care (IPCHC) has been organized for the first time. This is a project for students of the Faculty of Medicine (University of Antwerp), the departments health and social care of the University College of Artesis Hogeschool Antwerp, the departments health and social Care of the Karel de Grote-Hogeschool Antwerp, the department of dietetics and nutrition of the Plantijn-Hogeschool and the department of psychology and speech therapy of the Lessius Hogeschool. This project is a module of one week. All last year students of the different departments in health care and related education programmes learn to work together in an interprofessional context. The competence of a member of an interprofessional team ‘Interprofessional collaborator’ is developed based upon the CanMeds 2000 project. Students learn to work and collaborate with a patient-centred interprofessional model in order to optimize the quality of care. Students are divided into learning groups of twelve students from different education programmes in health care. The task of the tutor is to guide, observe and evaluate the group and the individual developing process during the week. Students learn to debate efficiently and effectively for solving concrete patient cases and interdisciplinary care situations. The module is closed with a plenary session and discussion, where they are confronted with experts’ practical experience with interprofessional care as a patient or professional. Students are evaluated with a self- and peer assessment and a personal portfolio.
