New name for the Health Professions Council

On Wednesday 1 August 2012 The Health Professions Council will change its name to the Health and Care Professions Council. At the same time, it will also become the statutory regulator of social workers in England, taking over regulatory responsibilities from the General Social Care Council. These changes have been made by government through the Health and Social Care Act 2012.

Although not everyone who is registered with the current HPC works in ‘health’ or ‘care’, the new name is intended to better reflect the increasingly diverse professions it regulates, many of whom work in a range of settings including education, community or social care. The Council will also be adopting a new strapline (‘Regulating health, psychological and social work professionals’) which will be used on a range of materials including the website and social media as well as public information materials and the display materials used at professional conferences and events.

To reflect the name change the main corporate logo has been revised as well as the registration logo, a bilingual English / Welsh logo and variants for use across social media channels. Cnanges will begin to appear on the website in July and correspondence after Wednesday 1 August 2012 will be from the Health and Care Professions Council. It will be the same organisation and will continue to undertake the same activities.
