CAIPE: Good Practice in Challenging Contexts: Acting Ethically in Difficult Times

A constant theme for practitioners in the social welfare field is the tension between ethical principles that emphasise respect for the individuality of human need, and an organisational context in which a complex combination of political pressures, psychological defences and economic constraints results in a tendency to dehumanise, standardise and label.

Debating these issues with colleagues from across national boundaries, as well as from across professional boundaries will promote the development of new ways of thinking and teaching.

This event is aimed at educators, practitioners, managers and service users from across the spectrum of social welfare services, and from across Europe and the rest of the world.

CAIPE: Interprofessional ethics: The personal and professional challenges of collaboration

In interprofessional working, the process of ethical decision making is both complex and multi-faceted, so it is necessary for members of the community of practice to acknowledge these differences in values, and to employ skills of negotiation and understanding in coming to decisions. Interprofessional ethics is a growing area of interest, although to date there is only a small amount of literature and research on this topic.
This conference will provide participants with the opportunity to explore and debate key issues, challenges and solutions in a critical and supportive environment.

CAIPE: All Together Better Health V: Seeing things differently: Evidence and innovation in interprofessional learning and practice

On behalf of the Australasian Interprofessional Practice and Education Network (AIPPEN) and InterEd, we invite you to join us at the 5th All Together Better Health Conference being held from 6 - 9 April 2010 at the Novotel Sydney Manly Pacific, Australia.

The All Together Better Health conferences are the leading international interprofessional health and social care symposia. Conference 4 in the series was held in Sweden in June 2008 and was hosted by the Karolinska Institute and Linkoping University. Previous conferences have been successfully hosted by Imperial College, London and the University of British Columbia. The All Together Better Health conferences are supported by InterEd, the international association for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice - a not for profit association.

We see things differently in the southern hemisphere. Therefore, we are encouraging diversity and innovation in the 2010 conference program. There will be diversity in the number, background, culture and experiences of our presenters and delegates. Health and social care professionals, practitioners, patients, consumers, administrators, policy makers and especially students are warmly invited to come and share their time and experiences with us. We will encourage discussion and debate, interactivity and international sharing and, in addition, we invite everyone to participate in the development of the Manly Charter to advance interprofessional education, learning and practice over the next two years. The Manly Charter will aim to ensure that the challenging and exciting dialogue from this important conference will continue into the future.

This conference offers an exciting opportunity for Australians and New Zealanders to engage with international thinkers, practitioners and patients. There will be something for all delegates, as well as the opportunity to enjoy one of Australia's most vibrant cities and the beach culture that makes it so famous.

We hope to see you there.
CAIPE: Exploring professionalism: a national conference

Dr Helen O’Sullivan – Director for the Centre for Excellence in Developing Professionalism at the University of Liverpool
Professor Julian Webb University of Warwick and Director of the UK Centre for Legal Education

Key Speaker:
Professor Fred Hafferty
Fred Hafferty has been involved in the teaching and assessing of professionalism in relation to medical students for many years. He has conducted research into what medical students know about professionalism and the impact of the hidden curriculum and role modelling upon students’ professional behaviour development. He argues that professionalism must not be reduced to ‘a static thing’ independent of its context and that thinking of professionalism as a set of observable behaviours during teaching and assessment may miss important elements of this difficult concept, demeaning its value.
Day registration for either day will also be available.
