Andrew has read medicine at Cardiff University since 2003 and is a postgraduate medical student by virtue of achieving a First Class Honours degree in Public Health (2006-7). He was the Ewen Maclean Research Scholar in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Cardiff University during the academic year 2008-09, where he undertook undergraduate teaching and project supervisory roles as a peer tutor, whilst writing a Master of Philosophy thesis exploring consent taking practices in women’s health. His research interests include interprofessional education in women’s health, the quality of information given to patients, consent, and the development of surgical tools for overseas countries.

From 2006 until February 2009, he was Chair of the Wales Healthcare Student Forum at the Welsh Assembly Government, leading a team of healthcare professional students to place the student voice at the heart of health and education reform in Wales. In August 2008, he co-founded the Wales Chapter for Healthcare Improvement at the Wales Centre for Health, a partnered multiprofessional student body of the 1000 Lives Campaign in Wales, as a vehicle for healthcare students to work together and be engaged in health services delivery and contribute to quality improvement, bridging their clinical experiences with an emerging passion for healthcare reform.
Passionate about integrating healthcare improvement and patient safety into the undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare curricula, he was a member of the professional advisory group responsible for organising the 1st Annual Quality Improvement Academy for health, social care and public health in Wales, and is a Member of the National Patient Safety Agency’s Editorial Board for the 2nd Edition of the publication Medical Errors. He is a student intern with the 1000 Lives Campaign team and is a member of the WHO Patient Safety Curriculum team at the Cardiff University pilot site.

Globally, with colleagues at several North American Universities, he is working on the development and launch of a multiprofessional student- and junior professional-led global mission called the Safe Surgery Student Mentor project. The project encourages students to assist with the spread and implementation of the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist. The project launches in autumn 2009 and is supported by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School for Healthcare Professions.
